Having a day of from manning the stand, but what an experience. New Designers in Islington’s business centre (opposite the Kebab centre, of course) has been a fantastic experience for me personally.
First of all just the sheer amount of content is staggering. Some of it is just amazing too. When we were setting up on Tuesday, me being apprehensive would be an understatement. Every stand (exept Goldsmiths) has their walls plastered with work. We had, well… a ping pong table in the middle of a white space.
The theme from our exhibition came from a few places. First of all, our course has always enjoyed a bit of leisurely table tennis. It was handed down to us from the years above, and will be for quite some time from the looks of things. Secondly the room next to ours was named Ping Pong due to students always pushing two desks together and giving it all.
Every time I talk about ‘Interaction Design’, people ask me, “oh, is that computer stuff?”. It gets infuriating, yes digital design is part of it but the biggest part is user centred design. That involves talking to people. The ping pong table was a perfect ploy to provoke questions and promote human interaction. Our stand got a lot of attention, some good, some bad, but after all, no publicity is bad publicity.
Our work was shown briefly in leaflets which were given out (oh it was enjoyable folding 1000 pieces of A3 paper), in 4 large A3 books which showed our work in more detail, and on the website www.raveinteraction.com. To give out contact details and link our work with our costumes and colours, we created trumps cards. They contained a brief blurb about us and our contact details. Unfortunately I only have my phone to take pictures, a DSLR is on my wish list, but here are a couple to keep you entertained.
