My name is Dan O’Connell. I am an Interaction Design graduate and web enthusiast who loves designing immersive, creative & user-friendly interactions.

I hope to one day conquer the world with an Arduino board, a windmill and a modem, but in the mean time, I’ll stick to front end web design + development.

RSA 09

The Royal Society of Arts hold competitions every year. This project was for the 2009 brief ‘Design Against Bicylcle Theft’.The brief was to design a product, space or service and explore methods that could be implemented to deter thieves.

RSA Bicycle Chain

Using a similar concept to that of a bicycle chain, the design is able to dynamically adjust it’s form, yet still have a solid and secure structure. Taking the environment itself as an inspiration, it was discovered that there are several unused lift shafts next to tube stations.

These spaces could be used to implement the design. This is especially beneficial for commuters as they can park their bikes in convenient locations. The spaces in between the links would be the area where the bicycles were stored. The structure would represent a bicycle chain, functioning as a large symbol, promoting cycling to the public.
