My name is Dan O’Connell. I am an Interaction Design graduate and web enthusiast who loves designing immersive, creative & user-friendly interactions.

I hope to one day conquer the world with an Arduino board, a windmill and a modem, but in the mean time, I’ll stick to front end web design + development.

Urban Environment Design

This project involved redesigning Berlin’s Alexanderplatz, in order to make better use of the space. My group’s idea was to create a surface that records the flow of human traffic.

Urban Environment Design

From this, a more intelligent design could be based around the paths and unused spaces. Our research illustrated that people do not stick to pre-designated pathways, they take their own, direct path.

From this research, we decided that with such an open area, it was best for the users to model how they use it, instead of us creating a design full of frustating obstructions. Less worn down areas, placed next to highly worn areas would be perfect seating areas, busy areas would be best left untouched so people can take their usual, direct paths. The least busy areas would be best used as ornamental and aesthetically pleasing areas, preferably with some greenery, as Alexanderplatz is so grey.

I created a simple message board for people to post their thoughts and comments on the project. The link was given out to the public on a small business card. Our design was aimed at the user designing their own environment, and although it is not a final solution, it was designing for the future.
